I bought 2 "vintage" ebikes. What have I gotten myself into?

Found these two old Giant LaFree ebikes on Facebook Marketplace and couldn’t resist. $30 for two ebikes? Of course they don’t work but Im pretty sure I can figure them out. They look pretty neat and work pretty good as regular bikes. I really like the electric blue/purple color.

Dont have the keys to them, but Ive already drilled one of the locks out, should be easy to hotwire with a simple switch. Also the batteries are dead and i don’t have a charger. The pack is two 12v12a lead acid batteries in serries with some weird charging circuit. Think ill replace the lead acids for now and think about lithium for later. Also will probably just bypass the old charging circuit and have leads coming out of the case to charge the battery with some cheap 24v charger. Nothing too difficult.

On a scale of “ somewhat stolen to whoop whoop that’s the sound of da police ” how stolen are they?

Nah, it’s all good - you see, they fell off the back of a truck.

It’s actually a pretty sad story where they were previously owned by an elderly couple who were killed when their house exploded due to a gas leak .

The bikes were in a separate garage, but the couple and their house burned to the ground, with the keys and presumably the chargers. I bought the bikes from an agent of their estate.

The bikes are also pretty old and relatively obscure, while I can see them being stolen they're not particularly valuable.

Those batteries look identical to the ones I just replaced in our APC UPS’s at work.
